The movie features Rumi and Vicky as two characters that are in love. While they are up to their usual sneaking and making love, they are caught by Rumi’s family and are pressurized to get married. Vicky, however, is not ready to commit and the story takes a dramatic turn when a marriage broker brings in Robbie as a prospective suitor for Rumi. Manmarziyan was one of the best Bollywood movies to come out in the year 2018. Whether it be the plot, the screenplay, the songs or the individual performances by the actors, Manmarziyan wins on all fronts.

The story is beautifully written and the actors do justice to the characters. It is one of those rare movies where even Abhishek Bachchan has given a wonderful performance – seriously. It appears as if the character of Rumi was written specifically for Taapsee Pannu. She embodies the spirit of Rumi very well. Wild, passionate and deceptively innocent – Taapsee Pannu gives a mindblowing performance as Rumi. However, the highlight of the movie was Vicky Kaushal as Vicky.
From an innocent, naive, poor boy in Masaan to a loud, charming hunk in Manmarziyan, Vicky Kaushal has come a long way. His role in the movie is more important than it appears at first glance. In the movie, Vicky loves Rumi with all his heart but for some reason, he just cannot commit to her. Vicky Kaushal while playing this character had to keep in mind to make sure that in spite of what he does, his character shouldn’t come off as a douche – and he does a brilliant job at that.

The songs in the movie are something to rave about. Even after you’re done watching the movie, you’ll find yourself humming those songs for days. What I particularly relished was that the songs in this movie had soul, something which has become a rarity these days. The direction of the movie is such that there’s no point where the movie gets boring.
My only beef with the movie, if any, is its ending, which is not something exclusive to this movie and is a characteristic of all Bollywood movies. People in India have an obsession with happy endings and often, to cater to that audience, the director has to incorporate that happy ending. While it might work in some places, in this movie it doesn’t – not for me at least. All that being said Manmarziyan is a movie worth watching and anyone who loves Bollywood movies shouldn’t miss out on it.
